The BD source's quality is average, with a native resolution of 900p, instead of the 87x specification commonly seen in A-1 Pictures' productions in recent years. The lines are sharp but have slight aliasing. Ringings also appear occasionally due to sharpening. The primary issue is the significant amount of dynamic noise added during production, which not only causes blocking in some scenes due to insufficient bitrate but also poses a significant challenge for us in terms of file size control.
We first applied descaling and reconstruction to address the line issues. Next, we used adaptive debanding, adaptive deblocking, and compensatory sharpening. To tackle the noise problem, we performed temporal stabilization and adaptive denoising on the noise layer to control the file size. We also observed that during the production of NieR:Automata more noise was added in the brighter areas (such as the sky) during production, as opposed to most studios who typically add more noise in darker scenes. Therefore, we adjusted the curve of adaptive denoising accordingly to preserve this style.
